Diamond / Sedaris

It was the Festival of Ideas this past week. I went and saw Jared Diamond talk about the history of societies that have exterminated themselves due to their overexploitation of the environment, and then I saw David Sedaris tell suggestive jokes about Willie Nelson. Good in very different ways.

I had never heard his voice before -- it was so squeaky!

EPL has quite a few audio versions of his books plus a "Live from Carnegie Hall" recording (not as good as live, of course). His story from Dress Your Family in Corudory and Denim about taking guitar lessons as a child has him singing commercial jingles in the voice of Billie Holiday to guitar teacher - Definitely something to be heard. It's so good and funny that it's spooky.

I just finished reading a book called Daemon, by David Suarez, and in his want to know more section, he suggested reading Jared Diamond.

I have been trying to finish Guns, Germs and Steel for a year...keep getting distracted! Our English cousin Howard's son Jared is named after Jared Diamond.
